CHICAGO, March 16 (UPI) -- Soybean futures rose on the Chicago Board of Trade Wednesday in a rally checked by news of continued trouble at a Japanese nuclear power plant.
Corn was off 19 1/2 to up 1 1/4, soybeans were up 15 to up 17 1/4, wheat was off 3/4 to off 5 3/4 and oats were off 3 1/2 to off 9.
Officials in the United States and Europe warned Japan was close to losing control of overheating fuel rods at the earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant. Japanese officials told of repeated setbacks in efforts to contain the damage as cameras captured images of leaking plumes of radioactive steam.
Equities made a comeback in Tokyo, but Wall Street suffered another sell-off day. In Chicago, soybeans rallied on news of wet weather in Brazil. In the corn market, South Korea purchased 100,000 metric tons of corn and 110,000 of meal Wednesday. Wheat futures fell as shipments to Japan were postponed, but some support was found with Tunisia purchasing 25,000 metric tons at their tender.
