Texas cotton production likely to double this year

The production of cotton in the south central US state of Texas is expected to be more than double the quantity produced last year, according to Lubbock-based Plains Cotton Growers (PCG).

Last year, the High Plains region in Texas produced 1.8 million bales of cotton, and this year the output is likely to increase to 4.35 million bales.

Accordingly, the statewide production of cotton is likely to nearly double to 6.7 million bales compared to 3.5 million bales of cotton produced last year.

Cotton farmers in the Texas region now need both high temperatures and rain to maximize their crop potential, according to PCG.

However, if it does not pour in the next few weeks and temperatures remain around the 100-degree F mark, crop abandonment in the High Plains region may shoot up to more than 18 to 20 percent average rate, the PCG added.
